Markku Kulmala, from the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research, discusses the ACCC Flagship concerning adaptation to climate change, from deep scientific understanding to practical solutions
The Atmosphere and Climate Competence Center (ACCC) is a Finnish Research Flagship constituted by the University of Helsinki, Tampere University, University of Eastern Finland and the Finnish Meteorological Institute who are all working to address two of the most urgent global Grand Challenges: climate change and deteriorating air quality. In addition to top-level science, ACCC aims to build a business ecosystem by transforming excellent science into solutions. The Flagship status runs from 2020 to 2024.
Objectives for the Flagship
- To provide beyond state-of-the-art scientific knowledge on two of the most urgent global Grand challenges: climate change and deteriorating air quality.
- To establish a platform (ACCC Service Portal) to collect big data from comprehensive observations and multiscale models to be delivered to various stakeholders.
ACCC research and impact
The ACCC consortium brings together the scientific knowledge of the ACCC partners (UH, FMI, UEF, TAU) and the needs and expertise of 40 key stakeholders. As a national Flagship, ACCC will support Finland to become an internationally leading expert and provider of technological solutions and data services relevant to climate change.
The ACCC coordinates its work via its Research and Impact Programs. The three Research Programs consist of:
- Quantifying and activating the potential of land-based climate change mitigation.
- Quantifying the air quality-climate interactions and their impacts.
- Climate change impact and adaptation.
The Research Programs provide new scientific knowledge and process-based understanding which the Impact Programs can subsequently deliver to society as knowledge-based actions and solutions.
The Impact Program consists of 13 Impact Tasks and Forums (Fig. 1) that will maximise the interaction between the research community, businesses, policy and societal sector.
ACCC IMPACT WEEK:
7th-10th December 2021
The ACCC Impact Week will offer a series of sessions and panel discussions among Earth System scientists and society stakeholders interested in the co-creation of science-based solutions for climate change and air quality.
The ACCC Impact Week will host both Finnish and international ACCC stakeholders and research communities as well as the networks of the PanEurasian Experiment (PEEX) Program, the Arena for the Arctic Science Collaborations and AASCO and International Eurasian Academy of Sciences.
The event is organised by the Atmosphere and Climate Competence Center (ACCC) in collaboration with:
- Sofia Cultural Centre, Helsinki
- Universities of Arctic
- Climate Leadership Council (CLC).
The event will allow for in-person and remote participation (hybrid). The ACCC received sponsorship from Prince Albert Foundation Monaco and the Sofia Earth Forum is sponsored by the Wihuri Foundation.
