EIT Digital has announced the launch of two new initiatives, SPIN Explore and SPIN Rise, aimed at strengthening Europe’s capabilities in commercialising deep tech innovations
These programmes aim to help researchers with essential skills as well as networks crucial for transforming new ideas into marketable products.
Supporting researchers
Europe, known for its significant scientific publications globally, has often struggled to translate academic excellence into commercial viability.
With only a handful of EU research institutions among the world’s top ranks, compared to main figures in the US and China, the need for effective technology transfer mechanisms has never been more urgent.
SPIN Explore
SPIN Explore starts with a five-week online course starting on October 22, 2024. It targets researchers across all career stages, offering key insights into entrepreneurship and intellectual property strategies. This crash course covers a spectrum of topics, from understanding market dynamics to creating narratives tailored for diverse audiences beyond scientific circles.
Participants of SPIN Explore will look into modules such as ‘Storytelling for Scientists’ and ‘Know Your IP Rights’, designed to equip them with the acumen to navigate the complexities of the entrepreneurial landscape confidently. By demystifying intellectual property and enhancing communication skills, the programme aims to empower researchers to effectively convey their scientific breakthroughs and protect their innovations.
SPIN Rise
For researchers set to advance further, SPIN Rise provides an intensive three-month hybrid programme. This stage offers access to top-tier training sessions led by industry experts, venture builders, and intellectual property professionals.
Beyond education, participants gain membership into EIT Digital’s expansive pan-European network, enabling collaboration opportunities and access to potential funding sources critical for scaling innovations.
The overarching goal of SPIN Rise is to enable researchers to grasp the business potential of their ideas fully. By refining their entrepreneurial skills and fostering a deeper understanding of market dynamics, participants are poised to drive impactful innovations within deep tech sectors across Europe.
Europe’s commercialisation challenged
EIT Digital’s SPIN programmes mark a significant step towards bridging the gap between academia and industry in Europe. By providing researchers with essential entrepreneurial tools and fostering collaboration on a pan-European scale, these initiatives aim to propel Europe towards greater commercial success in the global deep tech landscape.
Whether embarking on the foundational journey with SPIN Explore or advancing to the next level with SPIN Rise, EIT Digital offers a transformative pathway for researchers to turn visionary ideas into tangible, market-ready innovations. With a focus on skill-building, networking, and practical application, these programmes can reshape the future of deep tech innovation in Europe and beyond.
