The UK Government has new plans to strengthen the power of Artificial Intelligence, while also ensuring society stays safe and secure

A new programme called the AI Safety Institute Systemic Safety Grants Programme will provide researchers with up to £200,000 for each supporting project that investigates the societal risks associated with AI, including deepfakes, misinformation, and cyber-attacks.

Improving public trust in AI

This project, which has a total funding of £8.5 million, hopes to increase the public’s confidence in AI technology. It is designed to tackle the challenges set by AI, ensure that AI is used safely and responsibly, and have the potential to drive economic growth and improve public services.

Academic and industry researchers are encouraged to apply for the funding, with a focus on identifying risks linked with AI deployment in key areas such as healthcare and energy.

By working on addressing these risks, the government hopes to encourage the integration of AI technology and also create trust among the public.

How the AI Safety Institute Systemic Safety Grants Programme works

The first phase of the project, which launched on October 15th, will support around 20 research projects. Proposals will be accepted up until November 26, and successful applicants are expected to be announced in January 2025.

Overall, the goal is to develop a detailed understanding of AI’s challenges and develop long-term solutions to help migrate these risks.

The development of AI

With AI continuing to evolve and develop, the UK government highlights the importance of a regulatory approach, focusing on companies that develop the most advanced AI models.

This project should be able to balance boosting innovation and ensuring safety. The work set by the AI Safety Institute is part of wider efforts to establish the UK as a leader in responsible AI development.

By prioritising public safety and trust, the UK government is aiming for a society where AI can be beneficial.
