It was a full house for the opening keynote of day two at Information Security Europe 2019 – Europe’s number one information security event
Jamie Bartlett, Senior Fellow and former Director of the Centre for the Analysts of Social Media, Demos and best-selling author delivered a session on Discovering the Digital Underworld: Privacy, the Dark Web, Tech & Democracy.
He took his audience on a journey of discovery into how technology is changing society, from cybercrime and surveillance to privacy, data and democracy – including the Cambridge Analytica controversy. Jamie talks about how trust will be essential in data, software and devices in the future here.
This session was followed by another high profile speaker, Dame Inga Beale, Former CEO, Lloyds of London, who presented on View from the Board: Managing Organisation Complexity & Risk. She gave attendees her perspective on the challenges of managing a complex organisation – including culture change, balancing history and innovation when delivering digital transformation, and communication between the board and information security function. The second of Infosecurity Europe’s daily visitor polls delved into this issue, asking keynote attendees the question: In 2019, have you experienced difficulties in getting investment from the board to secure legacy systems while embracing new technologies? 57% said that they had.
Victoria Windsor, Group Content Manager at Infosecurity Group, says: “CISOs are managing increasingly complex security architectures while juggling challenges such as the growing skills crisis, rising costs and a myriad of compliance requirements. Improved engagement and collaboration between senior executives and security teams are needed to ensure investment is focused in the right areas, and embed secure behaviour in the DNA of the organisation.”
It was Global Exhibitions Day at Infosecurity Europe, and the International Zone played a starring role, showcasing some of the most exciting overseas companies in the Holland Pavilion, Bavarian Pavilion and US Pavilion. The UK’s new Cyber Security Ambassador, Dr Henry Pearson, also attended the event to deliver a speech to invited guests. Dr Pearson’s role will involve championing British cyber firms overseas.
It was particularly busy for networking events, as visitors took the opportunity to connect, share ideas and knowledge, and chew over solutions to challenges. These included Infosecurity Magazine’s Women in Cybersecurity event, hosted by Editor Eleanor Dallaway. This included a panel discussion on the challenges of diversity in cybersecurity, career opportunities for women in the industry, and an inspirational keynote presentation by technology evangelist, digital skills expert and entrepreneur Professor Sue Black OBE who advised listeners “don’t listen to the negative voices”.
