He is internationally recognised as one of the world’s pioneers in the field of Transradial Approach (angiography, angioplasty and stenting through the wrist artery) and has experience of doing more than 100,000 cath lab procedures with more than 75,000 of them through the transradial route which is unique and makes him one of the most experienced practitioners in the world.
Dr Patel has also been instrumental in teaching and training more than 5000 cardiologists from India and all over the world in the same technique through the TRICO (Transradial Interventional Course) that he set up thirteen years ago. These are annual academic courses attended by Interventional Cardiologists from all over the world.
He made global headline news last year when he performed the world’s first-in-human robotic heart surgery, paving the way for life-saving telerobotic operations across the globe. The scientific breakthrough saw coronary intervention performed on a female patient at a distance of 20 miles. The procedure, which lasted just 15 minutes was to place a stent in an artery that was clogged, using an internet-enabled robotic arm which Dr Patel guided to perform the surgery as a team of doctors and paramedics attended the patient to take care of any eventualities.
The first-of-its-kind surgery happened 32 years after the world’s first stent surgery was carried out in 1986. This leap in medical history means the very best doctors can reach patients at any part of the world as long as there is an internet connection, cath lab and robotic arm.
He has also personally designed dedicated catheter curves (patented as PAPA-1 and PAPA-2) for use in the transradial technique which are now manufactured in the USA.
In his spare time he has written three books, now used as training manuals around the world; Patel’s Atlas of Transradial Intervention: The Basics, Patel’s Atlas of Transradial Intervention: The Basics & Beyond and Patel’s Atlas of Complications of Coronary Interventions:Plan-B.
He has been presented with many awards by the presidents of India, most recently the Padma Shri Award for distinguished service in Medicine (cardiology) which is the 4th highest civilian award in the Republic of India, the Dr. B. C. Roy Award for pioneering a new technique in cardiology and the Dr. K. M. Sharan Cardiology Excellence Award for pioneering work in the field of cardiology; the highest award given by Indian Medical Association.
He has also authored 273 publications, 18 chapters in different textbooks, 145 original articles and 107 abstracts in reputed national and international journals and is Editor-in-chief for www.transradialWORLD.com an educational platform on the transradial approach. Dr Patel also sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Invasive Cardiology (USA) and is a reviewer for the Journal of American College of Cardiology, Catheterization & Cardiovascular Interventions, American Journal of Cardiology and International Journal of Cardiology.
