    Hywel was brought up in South Wales and went to a State School. He trained in medicine in London, specialising in dermatology. He has a Masters in epidemiology and statistics and a doctorate and higher doctorate in evidence-based dermatology. He is co-director of the Centre of Evidence-Based Dermatology at the University of Nottingham and is a consultant paediatric dermatologist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust where he specialises in helping children with severe eczema. Hywel’s main research interests include independent clinical trials and systematic reviews of interventions to prevent and treat skin diseases and is the most cited dermatologist globally. Hywel chaired the NIHR Health Technology Assessment Programme commissioning board from 2012 to 2015 and became HTA director in 2015. Hywel believes passionately about genuine patient and public involvement in NHS research and insists on patient and public involvement in all HTA funding committees. Hywel is an NIHR senior investigator emeritus and Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Outside, he is a keen gardener, classic car enthusiast and musician/composer.
