Leo van Wissen is professor emeritus of economic demography of the University of Groningen, and former director of the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) in The Hague, His research interests include demographic modelling and global population trends and forecasting, ageing, regional population change and migration. He supervised more than twenty PhD’s on topics such as economic-demographic interactions, migration, regional demographic change, ageing, health and wellbeing, but also on firm demography. He holds a master in human geography from the Free University and did his PhD at the Faculty of economics and econometrics of the same university. He is currently the chair of the Scientific Board of the European Doctoral School for Demography (EDSD), a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR), and Academia Europaea. Formerly he was the president of the Dutch section of the Regional Science Association, president of the Netherlands Demographic Society, and currently member of honour. He also served as a member of the Netherlands Social Science Council. He also obtained several large research grants, both nationally and internationally. Currently, he leads a large consortium of European researchers in the Horizon Europe project PREMIUM_EU, at the crossroads of migration and regional development research.
