Dr. Lijuan Yuan is a full Professor of Virology and Immunology at the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), Blacksburg, Virginia
The research in Dr. Yuan’s lab focuses on host-pathogen interactions in enteric viruses including infectivity, pathogenesis and immunity, and on intervention strategies to reduce viral diarrhea including prophylactics, therapeutics, vaccines and influences of probiotics/prebiotics and gut microbiota using gnotobiotic pigs as models.
Her research achievements over the past 30 years have established her as one of a few experts in the world in developing and utilizing gnotobiotic pig models to study human enteric viruses and vaccine-induced immune responses.
She has authored/co-authored 122 scientific publications, including recently a monograph book titled “Vaccine Efficacy Evaluation: The Gnotobiotic Pig Model”. She received Pfizer Award for Research Excellence in 2011, Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award from Virginia Tech Graduate School in 2017, and Grant Turnwald Innovation Award from Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2022.
