Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Volpp is Associate Professor at University West in Trollhättan, Sweden. In the Department of Mechanical Engineering, he is the thematic group leader of the ‘Welding and welding-based Additive Manufacturing’ group within Production Engineering. His main expertise is in laser materials processing, welding and laser Additive Manufacturing.
His professional career began in 2011 at BIAS (Bremer Institut für angewandte Strahltechnik GmbH), where Prof. Volpp worked on dynamics and stability during laser deep penetration welding of aluminum alloys. After receiving his PhD, he moved to Luleå, Sweden and increased his field of activities at Luleå University of Technology to further laser-based manufacturing processes. The scientific focus was on laser-matter interaction, monitoring and modeling of the behavior of molten material. This resulted in the promotion to docent, after which Prof. Volpp started at University West, Trollhättan, Sweden.
In addition to teaching activities in laser and manufacturing courses, he had the opportunity to participate in a Teaching Sabbatical (STINT) at University of Texas, Austin, USA
Prof. Volpp worked on many national, regional and international projects as coordinator and/or manager with partners from industry and academia. Fundamental research was enabled by the funding of the project SMART – Surface tension of Metals Above vapoRization Temperature (Vetenskapsrådet – The Swedish Research Council), in which Prof. Volpp had the possibility to explore high-temperature material properties, namely laser light absorption and surface tension.
