I have a BSc in pharmacology from University College Dublin and a PhD in immunology from Dublin City University. Initially I led a drug discovery group in Fujisawa pharmaceutical Co, Japan to discover novel anti-platelet agents – GPIIb/IIIa antagonists. Subsequently I worked on understanding the failure of this class of drugs as well as the nature of poor response to aspirin.
Building on my expertise in platelet function I worked to investigate the phenomenon of bacterial-induced platelet aggregation. This has led to an understanding of the central role of bacteria-platelet interactions in the development of sepsis. This has led to a drug discovery program to manage sepsis-mediated DIC
