The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 29) will be held from November 11 to 22, 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan. Here is everything you need to know about COP 29
COP 29 is the 29th conference of the parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Every year, this conference brings the world together to address the climate crisis, helping to support vulnerable communities and pushing us towards the goal of net zero by 2050.
COP 29 so far
Some of the key priorities of COP 29 include securing a new goal on climate finance, ensuring every country is supported and equipped to tackle stronger climate actions, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating stronger communities to tackle the climate crisis.
World Meteorological Organization warned that 2024 is on target to be the warmest on record, with temperatures between January and September reaching around 1.54C higher than in pre-industrial times. UN climate chief Simon Stiell encouraged nations to agree on a new global goal for climate finance in Baku.
The UK Prime Minister has announced that the UK will lead the world in the pro-growth clean energy transition. On the first day of COP 29 Keir Starmer declared that offshore wind developers will be prompted to invest in the UK’s historic industrial heartlands, coastal areas and oil and gas communities. This will create green jobs and help support sustainable factories.
The Clean Industry Bonus will also come with a provisional £27 million per Gigawatt of offshore wind projects. This means that with 7 to 8GW of offshore wind applied, the budget could go up to £200m.
As the UK works towards the global transition to clean energy its Clean Industry Bonus will support the future of clean energy industries helping them to thrive across the globe.
A greener future
As the COP 29 summit continues, the COP 29 presidency is delivering a balanced package of outcomes that includes clear next steps on the implementation of the Global Stocktake.
In partnership with the International Energy Agency (IEA), the presidency outlines key opportunities for COP29 to show progress since COP 28. This included;
- Scaling up energy storage and electricity grids.
- Focusing on cutting emissions from methane to fossil fuels.
- Creating solutions to boost clean energy investments.
- Making sure countries accelerate policy implementation.
