Cumbrian businesses are urged to embrace ethical AI practices as the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) launches a guide to support employers and HR

The Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) has released a comprehensive guide to help Cumbrian businesses grasp the implications of integrating artificial intelligence technologies, including ChatGPT.

While the technology brings commercial advantages, it also raises ethical and security concerns that need addressing.

These businesses are encouraged to explore artificial intelligence’s implementation’s potential benefits and drawbacks, including its effect on jobs, creativity, and human tasks.

Cumbrian businesses and AI

Cumbrian businesses must be cautious about the immediate risks posed by the new technology’s adoption. The spread of misinformation, copyright breaches, and manipulative chatbots, as reported by the Financial Times, could adversely impact companies’ reputations and operations.

Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of AI company DeepMind, has warned about the likelihood of job losses to robots, particularly affecting roles such as lawyers, copywriters, coders, and creative writers.

Embracing AI opportunities and challenges

As artificial intelligence evolves rapidly, Cumbrian businesses are encouraged to embrace innovation and experimentation. Peter Cheese, CIPD’s chief executive, emphasises understanding AI’s potential benefits and risks across different sectors and job roles.

The local Cumbria Chamber of Commerce is actively examining AI’s impact on digital skills needs as part of the Local Skills Improvement Plan. Suzanne Cladwell, the managing director, emphasises the importance of understanding AI’s opportunities and challenges to inform decision-making and reshape business practices.

AI’s impact on skills, staffing and business strategies

With the upcoming 2023 report release, Cumbrian businesses are gearing up to delve deeper into implications of artificial intelligence.

The next phase will explore ways to navigate the opportunities and challenges presented by AI, considering its impact on skills, staffing, and broader business strategies. Now is the time for organisations to adapt proactively to the AI revolution.
