In response to the devastating earthquake in Morocco, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, the United Kingdom swiftly mobilised its search and rescue teams for crisis control
The British government is taking proactive steps to support Moroccan-led rescue efforts.
This rescue mission bears a resemblance to previous operations carried out by the UK government in Turkey and Syria, where a similar dedication to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief was demonstrated.
Immediate assistance from the government of the UK
A team of sixty search and rescue specialists, four highly trained search dogs, and essential rescue equipment are being dispatched to the affected region. Additionally, a medical assessment team is also part of this deployment.
Today, the UK’s emergency response teams are departing for Morocco using two Royal Air Force A400M aircraft provided by the Ministry of Defence. This rapid deployment underscores the UK’s commitment to providing immediate assistance to the Moroccan people during this crisis.
Solidarity and support for the earthquake in Morocco
Foreign Secretary James Cleverly expressed the UK’s unwavering support, stating, “The UK is sending immediate support to Morocco, including a team of 60 search and rescue specialists and four rescue dogs to assist with the rescue effort.” He also extended his deepest sympathies to the people of Morocco during this tragic event.
Defence Secretary Grant Shapps empathised with the affected Moroccans, saying, “This is a devastating time for the people of Morocco, particularly those with loved ones they have lost or are missing.
The UK has taken a leading role in the international effort to enhance search and rescue operations – moving quickly to deploy our unique strategic airlift capabilities, expert personnel, and aid. We stand firmly by Morocco as they get through this terrible event.”
Specialised equipment and medical assessment for Morocco
The UK International Search and Rescue team (UKISAR) plays a crucial role in disaster response for the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office. Their specialised equipment, including seismic listening devices, concrete cutting and breaking tools, and propping and shoring equipment, equips them to efficiently navigate through collapsed structures and rescue individuals trapped beneath debris.
Furthermore, the UK Emergency Medical Team (EMT) is dispatching a four-person British medical assessment team to evaluate the situation on the ground and collaborate closely with Moroccan authorities.
Enhancing preparedness for natural disaster aftermath
This assessment helps determine the existing healthcare capacity and the extent of damage, allowing for better management of healthcare needs and appropriate support allocation during the aftermath of such a significant natural disaster.
In this crisis, the UK stands shoulder to shoulder with Morocco, offering its expertise, resources, and heartfelt solidarity to assist in the earthquake’s aftermath and help rebuild the affected communities.
