Here, MoTiV discuss the value of user data in transport and the importance of travel time
During COVID-19, the use of transport was examined globally. As the pandemic continues, we have to ask some serious questions about how transport infrastructure is created. For instance, how could a city create a better system of transport? The answer is to gather data, via consulting actual users of the system.
Over 7 months, MoTiV gathered that data in 8 European countries from more than 3,300 users. They used the Woorti smartphone app, developed by the project consortium, and analysed the results.
What did people think?
According to the results, mobility planning needs a rethink. Those who travel aboard transport systems contentiously pointed out similar things, such as the need for technology and the green nature of the vehicles.
All in all, the reality of travel is not the same as the expectations. Especially with COVID-19, where the need for social distancing is increasingly difficult for vehicles which carry workers in and out of normally busy cities.
One crucial finding has been the insight of how important travel time is to the service user. The necessity of knowing and decreasing travel time can make the difference between a good or bad day at work, as those of us who commute know. Thus, there is a need to feed these ideas into an overall shift in planning.
What can be done by urban and transport planners, authorities and police-makers to improve the entire situation of how we travel?
Here, MoTiV further discuss their findings, suggest recommendations and pinpoint their answers to all of your questions.
