Alongside this, changes to planning rules are introduced, unlocking lab space and promoting flexibility. Simultaneously, updates to the East-West Rail route, facilitating improved connections between Oxford and Cambridge, prominent science powerhouses, will attract heightened investment to the region.
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt commented on this initiative
“Our Life Sciences sector employs over 280,000 people, makes £94 billion for the UK each year and produced the world’s first covid vaccine.”
He added, “These are businesses that are growing our economy while having much wider benefits for our health – and this multi-million-pound investment will help them go even further.”
A thriving life sciences sector
The thriving Life Sciences sector, contributing over £94 billion to the UK economy in 2021 with a notable 9% year-on-year increase, has been identified by the Chancellor as a vital industry driving UK growth, prompting focused attention from the government.
Following the Treasury’s Life Sciences Connect conference hosted by the Chancellor on 29th March, where he engaged directly with senior industry representatives to gain insights into the opportunities and challenges they encounter, the package has been developed.
The package was revealed by the chancellor this morning at No. 10 Downing Street, where it was warmly applauded by the UK’s Life Science Council, CEOs of international life sciences businesses, and industry leaders.
