Patient privacy and data security are also essential in this field. The financial sector needs to focus on fairness, accuracy, and transparency to avoid discriminatory practices. A solid AI governance framework is crucial for managing AI risks. International standards like ISO 42001 provide a helpful structure for building such a framework. Key elements of an effective governance system include:

  • developing clear, responsible AI guidelines that align with company values and regulatory standards,
  • setting up processes for identifying and addressing AI-related risks,
  • and ensuring employees are well-trained on AI technology, its benefits and risks, and necessary regulations.

Effective AI governance cannot exist in isolation. It needs to tie in with the wider company governance programmes, including data protection and security.

Regular audits and assessments are also important to keep AI systems compliant and ethically sound, particularly given the rapidly changing AI landscape. By prioritising governance, businesses can innovate with confidence while minimising risks and staying in line with regulations.

Responsible AI as a catalyst for innovation

When implemented responsibly, AI can be a powerful driver of innovation and business growth.

For example, BJSS partnered with the Retail Trust to create a happiness dashboard that provides retailers with actionable insights into employee wellbeing. This system aggregates survey and interaction data from retailers and employees, offering a clear view of the financial and social impact on businesses.

The system was created with a robust framework to protect the underlying data. This included making sure survey responses could not be traced back to individuals. BJSS and the Retail Trust launched the AI-powered dashboard with nine retail partners, enabling retailers to customise their approach to employee wellbeing and enhance workforce support.

Preparing for the future of AI

As AI continues to evolve, businesses must stay one step ahead.

AI agents, for example, will bring new challenges around responsibility and accountability. These systems can perform more complex tasks, and connect to various processes in organisations.

Businesses will need to adapt their strategies and governance frameworks to meet emerging challenges. New regulations will also need to be considered as part of this. Addressing risks such as bias, privacy, and transparency will be essential for maintaining public trust and reducing legal risks.
