From September 22 to September 25, 2024, Liverpool will host one of Europe’s largest political gatherings, the Labour Annual Conference. But what can we expect from the Labour Party now that they’re in power?

This event promises a dynamic mix of policy discussions, training sessions, and keynote speeches, drawing over 17,000 attendees from constituencies, trade unions, and socialist societies across the UK.

The Labour Party Annual Conference

The Annual Conference is a key platform for the Labour Party to shape its future direction. Delegates will convene in the main hall to vote on policies proposed by the National Policy Forum (NPF) and motions submitted by constituencies. Key highlights include the Leader’s Speech on Tuesday afternoon, which caps off a series of speeches from party leaders and influencers.

Beyond the main proceedings, the Conference offers a robust fringe program held across Liverpool’s venues. These sessions cover diverse policy areas and provide opportunities for deeper engagement on critical issues facing the party and the country. Attendees can participate in discussions ranging from public procurement reform to achieving net-zero emissions, reflecting Labour’s commitment to addressing contemporary challenges.

The agenda also includes significant procedural elements. CLPs (Constituency Labour Parties), trade unions, and socialist societies are eligible to submit motions and constitutional amendments. All submissions must adhere to strict guidelines, such as addressing issues not covered in the NPF Final Policy Document and focusing on developments after July 5, 2024.

What to expect from Labour and the conference?

The Conference will feature emergency motions, addressing urgent issues that have arisen after the deadline for regular motions. These motions undergo rigorous scrutiny to ensure they meet criteria of immediate importance and relevance to the party’s agenda.

Constitutional amendments play a crucial role, subject to a three-year rule that limits the frequency of similar proposals, ensuring deliberation on evolving party policies.

The Conference shows the Labour’s commitment to public service productivity, investment in public services, and achieving mission-led governance goals.

With its expansive agenda and emphasis on democratic participation, the Labour Annual Conference 2024 stands as a cornerstone event in British politics. It not only shapes Labour’s future policies but also serves as a platform for engaging with broader societal challenges, reflecting the party’s role in shaping the national discourse.

As Liverpool prepares to host this significant event, delegates and observers alike anticipate lively debates, strategic insights, and pivotal decisions that will shape the Labour Party’s trajectory in the coming years.
