In response to the escalating challenges set by climate change, Network Rail has revealed a £2.8 billion climate crisis investment plan to strengthen Britain’s rail network against the effects of extreme weather
This initiative forms part of the organisation’s broader £45.4 billion five-year investment strategy, aimed at providing a better, greener railway to excel in railway performance.
The impact of climate change on our railways
With summers growing hotter and winters witnessing increased flooding, Network Rail has recognised the urgent need to improve infrastructure resilience.
The plan entails a multifaceted approach, including upgrades to drains, dams, and other essential components exposed to climate-related disruptions.
With 14 storms in the last year alone, intervention is vital. Delays and cancellations, such as those experienced at Christmas time, highlighted how our railway operations must be protected against climate change events.
The plan for better railway operations
Over five years up until 2029, Network Rail will invest in activities and technology to improve the railway service and make it more reliable.
Central to the initiative is allocating resources towards the upkeep of drains, cuttings, and embankments, with millions saved for improving their resilience to flooding and landslips.
Repair works targeting over 20,000 cuttings and embankments spanning over 300 miles will further improve the network’s defences against weather events.
By installing CCTV at places with a high risk of flooding, Network Rail can ensure a better response; they will also introduce technology that keeps trains running smoothly in difficult conditions.
Safer and more reliable travel
This investment represents a substantial escalation from previous commitments, with funding for climate resilience nearly tripling from initial projections.
As well as the climate resilience measures, the plan allocates resources towards asset replacement, digital signalling projects, and operational enhancements.
Network Rail is committed to delivering a safe, reliable, and sustainable rail network for passengers and operators.
By prioritising climate resilience and infrastructure modernisation, the organisation works to develop a more resilient and sustainable future for Britain’s railways, ensuring continued connectivity and mobility.
