A new education pack aimed at primary schools has been launched by two leading agriculture organisations.
The National Farmers Union (NFU) and Farming and Countryside Education (FACE) have launched a new education pack, ‘Why Farming Matters’.
The resource, which gained backing from Environment Secretary Liz Truss, will show young people where their food comes from, as well as giving insight into the role farming plays in their everyday lives.
The pack was put together in response to the Environment Secretary’s challenge to ensure schools have more material on the sector and will help educate a new generation of young people about farming.
NFU Vice President and FACE trustee Guy Smith said: “Our Why Farming Matters education packs will provide interactive, accurate and balanced information about our industry which will lay the foundations on which the next generation of agricultural workers can build.
“The packs had previously received a five star rating from the Times Education Supplement (TES), but in light of the minister’s comments last year, we recognised that a revamp was in order.
“By introducing new interactive web content and making the pack even more cross-curricular this updated version will be a valuable asset for schools across the UK.”
Commenting on the resource, Truss said: “This year the Government introduced our new rigorous national curriculum so children can learn about where their food comes from and so they can learn the names of different trees and animals.
“I am pleased the NFU have developed these Why Farming Matters packs which will be a valuable resource to teachers and teaching staff across the UK and long-term will provide a solid learning platform for youngsters interested in farming and agriculture.”
The education pack is aimed at key stage level 2 pupils and is a free resource, which can be downloaded here: ‘Why Farming Matters’.
The farming sector has recently been at the forefront on the public’s awareness, protesting the price of produce.
