Northern Ireland and Horizon Europe: A gathering of top researchers, scientists, and businesses in Lisburn, Northern Ireland today aims to inspire more successful bids for Horizon Europe funding

The EU initiative known as Horizon Europe, worth over £80 billion, offers significant opportunities for innovation across various sectors, from health and clean energy to digital infrastructure.

A Northern Ireland and Horizon Europe partnership

Northern Ireland has a strong track record in research and development, the roadshow provides a platform for local innovators to connect with potential partners, gain expert advice, and learn from successful applicants.

UK Science Minister Lord Vallance emphasised the importance of seizing these opportunities: “The discoveries and innovations on display today demonstrate the potential of Northern Irish researchers to make the most of the UK’s association with Horizon. Their ideas can drive economic growth and improve living standards.”

Accelerating discoveries, boosting the economy, and improving lives

Professor Chris Johnson, Chief Scientific Advisor for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, highlighted the region’s talent and the potential for groundbreaking research: “Northern Ireland is home to brilliant minds capable of delivering transformative solutions. By participating in Horizon Europe, we can accelerate discoveries, boost our economy, and improve lives.”

A success story: The EYE-RISK Project

One such success story is the EYE-RISK project, led by Queen’s University Belfast. This collaborative effort aimed to find a cure for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). The project’s impact extends beyond scientific advancements, fostering international collaborations and providing valuable opportunities for early-career researchers.

As the UK government continues supporting innovation and research, events like this roadshow are crucial in inspiring and empowering Northern Ireland’s research community. The region can contribute to global scientific progress and drive economic growth by embracing a partnership between Northern Ireland and Horizon Europe.
