Northumberland County Council has moved some services to a new online self-service portal. My Northumberland will deliver services such as council tax, business rates, and benefits via an online service, which will be more efficient.

The county council said the service will save more than £1m over three years, as it expects the portal to reduce the 200,000 telephone and face-to-face transactions it carries out every year. It will also save over £300,000 spent on post.

Revenue, benefits and customer services manager Graeme Barnes said: “The project team worked excellently together to deliver to some very tight timescales, which will significantly help to drive take-up of the service.

“Our plans include adding more services to My Northumberland throughout the year.”

The portal will provide a single logon, which will enable residents and businesses to access numerous services. Documents and statements will be available to view online, including those covering payments and charges.

The transactions will be automated and integrated within existing systems. This will remove the need to manually enter information across platforms. Customer service staff will also be able to operate on behalf of customers to fill in the details.

The project was delivered by supplier Gandlake within budget and will be ready for the start of annual billing during 2016/17.
