How can L&R help?
Lower limb ulceration is a common cause of patient suffering, and management poses a significant burden on the NHS, with venous leg ulcers being the most common hard-to heal wound in the UK. It is estimated that over one million people in the UK have lower limb ulceration.
Much of this burden costs over £3 billion each year, and it falls on the community nursing workforce. In the UK, up to 50% of the community nursing workload is taken up by chronic wound management. Despite clear evidence, considerable unwarranted variations in venous leg ulcer management exist. UK healing rates for venous leg ulcers are as low as 37% at 12 months.
Different thinking is needed to improve healing rates and reduce the burden on the NHS, the nursing workforce, and patients’ lives.
Redesigning wound care
L&R has partnered with numerous NHS trusts to support the redesign of care delivery for leg ulcer patients, reducing nursing hours and associated costs of care, improving patient and workforce wellbeing, and improving nursing workforce retention.
In partnership with L&R UK, South West Yorkshire Partnership Foundation Trust transformed leg ulcer service provision. Basing the results on a 100,000-patient population, they achieved the following savings:
- £903,500 reduction in total treatment costs
- £226,000 reduction in product costs
- 11,600 nursing hours released back to care, which is 6 nurse FTE
Along with:
- 72% of Wounds healed by week 18, with 99% of wounds healed by week 42.
In addition to the above, they significantly improved staff well-being and sustainability outcomes, making positive changes in both areas.
Continued support for the NHS and wound care
