Lord Faulkner of Worcester, the UK Trade Envoy to Taiwan, embarks on a week-long mission to Taiwan to fortify the UK-Taiwan Trade Partnership and foster deeper economic ties
In July, official discussions between the UK and Taiwan commenced to bolster the UK-Taiwan trade partnership.
This multifaceted agreement encompasses critical sectors such as energy, digital trade, and bilateral investments, aligning with both nations’ shared objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Nurturing renewable energy collaboration between the UK and Taiwan
Lord Faulkner leads a delegation of ten British renewable energy enterprises to participate in the 18th UK-Taiwan Energy Conference.
This gathering serves as a platform for sharing UK expertise in offshore wind development, including operations and maintenance, as well as emerging technologies like low carbon hydrogen, CCS, and smart grids. These initiatives aim to accelerate renewable energy collaboration between the UK and Taiwan.
Diplomatic engagements and cultural ties
During his visit, Lord Faulkner engages in high-level discussions with President Tsai Ing-wen and Economic Affairs Minister Mei-Hua Wang to enhance economic and trade cooperation.
Additionally, he joins in celebrating the 40th anniversary of the UK Government’s Chevening scholarships, fostering stronger educational and cultural connections. He also delivers a keynote address at the Better Business Awards ceremony, organised by the British Chamber of Commerce in Taipei.
UK-Taiwan: Strengthening transport and railway links
Lord Faulkner continues to bolster UK-Taiwan relations based on his lifelong interest in transport and railways. His itinerary includes visits to the Sugar Railways at XiHu Cultural Park, the National Taiwan Museum’s Railway Department Park, and the construction site of the Danjiang Bridge, designed by the renowned UK architectural firm Zaha Hadid Architects.
Lord Faulkner’s optimism for the future
Expressing his anticipation for the visit, Lord Faulkner highlights the growth in UK-Taiwan bilateral links since his last visit in 2018. He commends Taiwan’s ascent from the UK’s 8th to 5th largest trading partner in the APAC region.
Furthermore, he lauds the flourishing people-to-people connections, with UK visitors to Taiwan topping the European inbound visitor’s chart for the year’s first half.
