The US company Boeing has announced its plans to more than double its purchases of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) this year to 5.6 million gallons
On the 15th of February 2023, Boeing agreed to buy the equivalent of 21.2 million litres of blended sustainable aviation fuel from Neste, the world’s largest SAF producer.
“This SAF procurement makes up 25% of Boeing’s total jet fuel needs for last year” Sheila Remes, the company’s vice president of environmental sustainability, said in a statement.
Protecting the climate with sustainable aviation fuel
Neste’s “MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel” is blended with conventional jet fuel at a 30/70 ratio and is made from renewable waste and residue raw materials such as cooking oil and animal-fat waste. Neste has also claimed the fuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions over the lifecycle compared to Jet A by up to 80%.
The fuel will be supplied by EPIC Fuels and Signature Aviation (2.3 million gallons) and Avfuel (300,000 gallons) to the Boeing ecoDemonstrator flight test program and the company’s commercial sites in Washington state and South Carolina. Altogether, the new purchase agreement more than doubles Boeing’s SAF procurement from last year.
‘We are demonstrating our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint and catalyse the SAF industry” commented Sheila Remes, Boeing Vice President of Environmental Sustainability.
We are demonstrating our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint and catalyse the SAF industry
“This SAF procurement makes up 25% of Boeing’s total jet fuel needs for last year, including our production, delivery, Boeing ecoDemonstrator, and Dreamlifter flights, and we aim to increase that portion in the years to come.”
A pathway to a more sustainable future
2021 saw Boeing pledge to deliver commercial aeroplanes capable and certified to fly on 100% sustainable aviation fuel by 2030.
Consistently the aviation sector has faced pressure from environmental groups to reduce its emissions on a global scale. SAF is proving to be the way forward.
