Non-communicable Diseases/ NCDs kill 14 million people each year equalling 71% of all deaths worldwide. They are the leasing cause of death globally. An NCD is a medical condition or disease that isn’t caused by an infectious or transmissible agent. They are usually caused as a direct result of lifestyle or environmental factors. Most common NCDs include diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases and mental illnesses.
Non-communicable Diseases are largely preventable by the reduction of a few of the largest factors. Tobacco, alcohol, lack of exercise and unhealthy diet. Tobacco has a massive impact on deaths. It is estimated that by 2020 tobacco will on average be causing 7.5 million deaths a year equalling 10 percent.
In 2012, all United Nation countries committed to achieving a 25% reduction in premature mortality from NCDs by 2025.
