New plans set by the UK government will grow their participation in Horizon Europe, the world’s largest research programme, offering 380 billion in funding between 2021 and 2027

As the UK is fully integrated into Horizon Europe, the government is eager to ensure that British researchers, innovators and businesses make the most of opportunities available through Horizon Europe.

The UK government’s plans for maximise participation in Horizon Europe

2025 is the year for the UK to get the most out of Horizon Europe. The plans to increase researchers’ participation in Horizon Europe hope to drive collaborative projects across Europe.

Horizon Europe is a strong platform for researchers to investigate and tackle key global challenges. This can range from healthcare breakthroughs to tackling climate change.

It also promotes cross-border collaboration, which allows UK researchers to work alongside others from across Europe and other countries involved in Horizon Europe, such as Canada and South Korea.

With this in mind, the government sees Horizon as a key driver of economic growth, allowing the development of new technologies, products, and solutions to transform industries and improve lives.

Horizon Europe opportunities

Recent figures suggest that UK participation in Horizon Europe is gaining momentum. For example, the UK hosted 18 projects in the latest European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grants, the second-highest number among all participating countries.

This success comes after implementing various support initiatives, including “pump priming” grants for UK applicants, a comprehensive PR campaign, and a series of roadshows that offered practical advice and networking opportunities for businesses and researchers.

Going into the future, the government is looking to capitalise on Horizon Europe funding in 2025. Key plans include a series of Horizon Europe roadshows, following on from successful events held across Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the West Midlands in 2024.

These events are designed to allow businesses and researchers to learn from others who have successfully navigated the Horizon application process. Upcoming roadshows in Wales and London will continue to support UK participants in this way, helping them access valuable information and networking opportunities.

British researchers and businesses will also travel to Italy, Germany, and Spain to meet potential collaborators and to develop strong, competitive research proposals.

These events are particularly valuable for organisations that may be new to Horizon Europe or seeking guidance on maximising their chances of success.

The UK government also plans a renewed PR blitz in 2025 to promote Horizon Europe funding opportunities.

The campaign will target R&D-focused businesses and encourage them to apply for funding, showcasing various projects from medical research to innovations in green technologies. The campaign will use a range of media channels, including LinkedIn and podcasts, to reach the widest possible audience and highlight the support available to applicants.

A bright future for UK R&D

Innovate UK offers travel awards of up to £700 for those attending Horizon-related events across Europe to help cover the cost of attending R&D events. These grants will make it easier for UK innovators to network with potential research partners and further enhance their applications for Horizon funding.

The plans for 2025 are designed to help businesses like Recycleye, a UK company developing AI-powered robotics for waste sorting, make the most of Horizon Europe.

With a £385,000 grant, Recycleye has refined its technology and scaled up operations, positioning the company at the forefront of the European waste management sector.

By providing researchers and businesses with the tools, knowledge, and support to succeed, the UK hopes to strengthen its position as a global leader in science and technology. With Horizon Europe funding available and opportunities for collaboration growing, 2025 is set to be a key year for the UK’s participation in Horizon Europe.
