To boost innovation, British and European Union science chiefs are urging researchers and businesses to take the opportunities presented by Horizon Europe’s funding

Horizon Europe, the world’s largest collaborative research program, aims to promote cooperation among some of the brightest minds across Europe and beyond.

More people urged to participate in Horizon Europe funding scheme

The European Commissioner for Research and Innovation, Illiana Ivanova, alongside UK Science and Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan, joined by leaders from various sectors at the Royal Society to advocate for increased participation in Horizon Europe.

Horizon Europe, estimated at £80 billion, offers substantial financial support for research and development projects. The average grant totalling £450,000 presents a significant opportunity for individuals and businesses engaged in R&D to secure vital funding.

Horizon Europe also promotes international collaboration, allowing researchers to partner with colleagues from EU countries, New Zealand, Canada, and Israel.

The success of Horizon Europe’s funding

Some success stories, such as Nova Innovation’s £17 million grant for tidal energy development and The Floow’s nearly £3 million project on road safety, show the real benefits of Horizon funding for UK firms.

These examples highlight the program’s potential to drive innovation across diverse sectors, from healthcare to environmental sustainability. Secretary of State Michelle Donelan emphasised the deal secured by the UK, which enhances the benefits of association with Horizon Europe for British scientists and taxpayers.

Commissioner Ivanova echoed this view, urging British researchers and businesses to take the opportunity to collaborate and apply for funding.

Promoting innovation within the UK

Efforts to promote Horizon Europe extend beyond the Royal Society event, with ongoing discussions to enhance UK-EU cooperation in emerging technologies. This collaboration promises transformative advancements that can positively impact various aspects of society.

A series of initiatives planned for 2024 aims to broaden awareness of Horizon Europe’s benefits, targeting businesses and researchers nationwide. These efforts include multi-channel communication campaigns to showcase real-world applications and collaboration opportunities.

Practical resources and funding opportunities, such as ‘pump priming’ grants of up to £10,000, are available to support UK bids for Horizon funding.

UK’s science and technology sector

The UK’s leadership in science, innovation, and technology is recognised globally, with renowned universities and a history of groundbreaking discoveries.

Horizon Europe, structured around pillars addressing scientific excellence, global challenges, and industrial competitiveness, aligns with the UK’s economic growth and societal progress priorities.

Innovate UK’s website offers resources and guidance for businesses and researchers applying for Horizon funding, encouraging smaller enterprises to pursue Horizon and Copernicus funding.
