Recent research conducted by the Global Government Forum shows significant opportunities for the UK government to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) in transforming policymaking, enhancing national security, and improving public service delivery
However, the report highlights that the UK is currently dragging behind in fully capitalising on AI adoption. The Digital Leaders 2024 report, supported by Cognizant, emphasises a challenge facing UK policymakers, while there is substantial ministerial interest and external enthusiasm about AI’s potential, practical implementation efforts remain underdeveloped.
Key findings reveal commendable initiatives in AI safety and standards, such as the AI Safety Summit hosted at Bletchley Park and the establishment of the AI Safety Institute.
Maintaining global leadership with AI adoption
These efforts are praised for their cautious approach, ensuring responsible AI deployment. However, there is an important need to advance practical applications through rigorous testing, implementation, and scaling across government sectors.
To address these gaps, the report calls for a unified AI roadmap and strategic vision including all government departments. It highlights recent organisational changes, including consolidating AI leadership under the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT), which are seen as positive steps toward achieving cohesive AI strategy and governance.
The report calls for swift political endorsement of the Central Digital and Data Office’s (CDDO) proposed AI vision. This vision aims to unify efforts across Whitehall and set clear objectives for AI integration by the end of 2024. There is also a recommendation to establish an AI hub at DSIT to foster collaboration and expertise-sharing among government entities.
Future digital missions
The report calls for the development of new digital missions and updates to the Government Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework to include AI-specific roles and competencies. These measures are essential for building a skilled workforce capable of driving AI innovation within government operations.
Kevin Cunnington, former director general of the Government Digital Service, emphasises the potential for rapid improvement in AI adoption if the government commits boldly to use these technologies. Yatin Mahandru of Cognizant underscores AI’s transformative potential, urging a suitable strategy to ensure the UK remains competitive in the digital age.
