UK-ROK accord: The Republic of Korea and the UK (ROK) have signed an Accord solidifying their commitment to jointly enforce United Nations Security Council (UNSC) sanctions against North Korea

The Downing Street Accord, inked by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and President Yoon Suk Yeol, includes a defence agreement marking the initiation of joint sea patrols. These patrols aim to counter the illicit activities of North Korea, often facilitated by smugglers navigating the East China Sea.

Combating North Korea’s aggressive posturing

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps emphasised the UK’s leading role in supporting the ROK against North Korea’s aggressive posturing. The collaboration deepens ties between the Royal Navy and the Republic of Korea Navy, ensuring the safety and security of the Indo-Pacific region.

UK-ROK accord: Historical ties and commitment to democracy

Foreign Secretary David Cameron highlighted the longstanding relationship between the UK and ROK, celebrating 140 years of diplomatic ties. The Accord, signed 70 years after the Korean War Armistice, underscores the commitment to democracy and signifies a unique step in securing the Korean Peninsula’s and the region’s security.

Strategic cyber partnership and defence cooperation

The Accord extends beyond maritime concerns, encompassing a commitment to a Strategic Cyber Partnership. This involves both nations working collaboratively to address cyber threats.

Additionally, a Ministerial Statement Of Intent establishes a new Defence Partnership for Industrial and Capability Cooperation, fostering dialogue for greater integration in defence exports and joint projects.

Honouring sacrifice and strengthening future collaborations

President Yoon Suk Yeol, accompanied by The Duke of Gloucester, will lay a wreath at the Korean War Memorial in London during the State Visit. This solemn act commemorates 70 years since the armistice, acknowledging those who sacrificed their lives. Looking ahead, the UK and ROK commit to further security and defence cooperation, reinforcing their partnership for the years to come.
