World Water Day 2024. Today is a reminder towards the global call to action to recognise the importance of water in promoting peace and prosperity worldwide

The World Health Organization chose the theme “Water for Peace,” and this year’s World Water Day emphasises the power of cooperation in managing our planet’s most precious resource.

Water is essential for life and well-being. As more than 3 billion people worldwide depend on water that traverses national borders, the need for collaborative efforts to manage and conserve water resources is urgent.

Water for Peace

With the impacts of climate change and growing populations, water scarcity and pollution often cause tensions between communities and nations.

Despite these challenges, only 24 countries have comprehensive cooperation agreements for all their shared water bodies, highlighting the need for greater unity in water management.

The World Health Organization’s message

Recognising water not only as a resource but as a human right, World Water Day 2024 calls for individuals, communities, and governments to unite around using water as a catalyst for peace and stability.

One of the key messages reflected on this day is that water cooperation creates a positive ripple effect, influencing harmony, prosperity, and resilience.

Water cooperation

Successful examples of water cooperation, such as water user associations in Yemen and river basin organisations in Senegal, show collaborative water management’s transformative potential in resolving conflicts and empowering communities.

The recently published United Nations World Water Development Report 2024 provides evidence of water’s role in helping prosperity and promoting peace.

Highlighting that rivers, lakes, and aquifers transcend political boundaries, the report emphasises the importance of international cooperation in managing transboundary water resources.

Water resource management

Cooperation among diverse water users is essential for integrated water resources management at both local and national levels. International agreements and institutions for peaceful transboundary water management are critical for stability and security.

By prioritising cooperation and sustainable management of water resources, the world can transform water from a potential source of conflict into a powerful tool for peace, stability, and prosperity.
