Northern Ireland’s Wrightbus has announced a £25 million investment into cutting-edge research and development that is expected to accelerate the production of next-generation electric and hydrogen-powered buses for transport innovation

The funding hopes to create skilled local jobs, boost regional growth, and support the UK’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

Wrightbus’ commitment to green innovation

The Ballymena-based company is already the UK’s fastest-growing zero-emission bus manufacturer and a key player in clean transport innovation. This latest investment reinforces its role as a leader in the green mobility sector while supporting the government’s broader Plan for Change.

The funding will be channelled into four major R&D areas, including £10 million to develop the world’s most efficient electric double-deck and single-deck bus, the Wrightbus StreetDeck Electroliner. Designed for rapid charging and long-distance travel, this bus can travel up to 200 miles on a single charge and recharge in just 2.5 hours. The goal is to slash energy costs and reduce operators’ dependence on fossil fuels.

Driving the future of electric and hydrogen transport

Another £5 million is being invested in developing the UK’s first hydrogen-powered coach. Due to launch within the next 18 months, the coach will offer a range of up to 1,000km per refuel, combining hydrogen power’s environmental benefits with traditional diesel coaches’ long-distance capabilities.

Product validation will also be a key focus, with £5 million allocated to ensure all new vehicles undergo rigorous testing at the UK’s most advanced proving grounds. These facilities will assess durability, efficiency, and safety, helping to set new global standards for green public transport.

A further £5 million will enhance Wrightbus’ telematics system – a high-tech vehicle monitoring solution that collects real-time performance data. This technology helps operators optimise routes, extend vehicle lifespans, reduce costs, and improve fleet efficiency using AI-driven predictive maintenance.

Wrightbus’ progress highlights the economic and environmental impact of bold R&D investment. The company recently hit a milestone of over 50 million zero-emission miles travelled, preventing more than 85,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions compared to diesel alternatives. Its manufacturing and supply chain now supports businesses in 47 UK counties and several European countries, including Germany, France, and the Netherlands.

Leading the change in the UK’s net zero mission

The firm’s production numbers continue to rise, with output expected to increase from 1,016 buses in 2024 to 1,200 in 2025, and up to 1,400 by 2026. A record-breaking £500 million deal with Go-Ahead in 2023 secured over 1,000 orders and created 500 new jobs in Ballymena, while supporting thousands more across the UK.

Wrightbus’ rapid growth shows the overall momentum in the UK’s clean transport and energy sectors. Since July, over £34.8 billion in private investment has been announced for clean energy industries, contributing to a record 382,000 electric vehicles sold in 2024. Public charging infrastructure has also grown rapidly, with more than 75,000 charge points now available nationwide.

With further government strategies on the horizon, including an upcoming Industrial Strategy this summer, Wrightbus is setting a clear example of how private-sector innovation can drive regional development, create jobs, and strengthen the UK’s position in the global race towards net zero and transport innovation.
